2025 Guide to Curaçao Taxi Prices: Fixed Fares & Travel Tips

You know how sometimes you land in a new country, all excited, only to get into a taxi and suddenly feel like you’re in the middle of a negotiation battle on Deal or No Deal? Yeah, Curaçao is putting an end to that.

If you’re planning a trip to the island or you’re already there trying to figure out how to move around without getting ripped off or awkwardly bargaining like you’re at a crowded market place, this post is for you.

For the longest time, taxis in Curaçao didn’t have meters. That meant pricing was more or less… vibes. Drivers would quote you a price, and you either accepted it, tried to haggle, or kept walking. Great if you love spontaneous budgeting. Not so great if you don’t want to fight with a stranger after a long flight.

But recently, Curaçao introduced guideline-based pricing for taxis.

What does that mean?

Basically: routes now have set prices. You’re not just winging it anymore. The price you’ll pay for a ride from the airport to your hotel or from the beach to your Airbnb is now (more or less) standard

These standardized prices apply to common routes, including airport pickups, popular beaches, and hotels.

Why Did Curaçao Change Its Taxi Pricing System?

For years, taxi fares in Curaçao were mostly informal. No meters. No apps. Just 'tell me where you’re going' and hope the driver plays fair. But in a move to improve transparency, fairness, and tourist satisfaction, the government rolled out a new system in 2025: fixed, guideline-based pricing.

It’s part of a broader effort to professionalize local transport, reduce disputes, and enhance visitor experience on the island.

Example Fares in Curaçao (2025):

  • Hato International Airport to Willemstad: ANG 71 (approximately $40) could be $45 based on taxi service being used.

  • Willemstad to Jan Thiel Beach: ANG 50–60

Note: Some rates are standard while there’s some that are not.

Are There Extra Taxi Charges in Curaçao?

Yes, but they’re clearly defined:

  •  Night rides (from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM) come with a 25% surcharge

  •  Groups larger than four people also incur a 25% surcharge

  • Waiting time and detours can add to the fare, but these should be discussed in advance with the driver

How to Identify Official Taxis in Curaçao

To avoid unregistered drivers, always check for the 'TX' prefix on the license plate. Registered drivers also usually have their taxi ID or license visibly displayed inside the car. Don’t be shy about asking to see it. If they hesitate, consider it a red flag.

Is There Uber in Curaçao?

Short answer: No. Uber, Bolt, and other ride-hailing apps do not operate in Curaçao. That means your best bet for safe, regulated rides is sticking with licensed taxis or hotel-arranged transport.

This makes the fixed fare system even more important. Without a digital alternative, knowing what to expect with taxis makes all the difference.

Tourist Tips for Taking Taxis in Curaçao

Getting around in Curacao can seem daunting at first which is why we’ve compiled these tips below

  • Confirm the fare before getting in

  •  Carry small cash in ANG or USD—many taxis don’t accept cards- Ask to see the fare sheet if unsure

  •  Use hotel desks or travel desks to arrange rides

  • Tipping isn’t mandatory but appreciated—round up if you’re happy with the service

What About the New Currency: Caribbean Guilder (XCG)?

In addition to taxi fare changes, Curaçao is also transitioning from the Antillean Guilder (ANG) to the Caribbean Guilder (XCG). While ANG is still in circulation in early 2025, XCG will gradually become the standard and official currency.

For travelers, this might not cause much confusion, prices are often shown in both currencies. But if you're exchanging money, ask which one you’ll be receiving. We’ve also written a blog post on this.

Other Ways to Get Around Curaçao

If you’re not taking a taxi, here are a few other transport options:

  • Public Buses: Affordable but not always punctual. Best for budget travelers with time to spare.

  • Car Rentals: Great for flexibility. Roads are decent, but parking can be tight in town centers.

  • Hotel Shuttles: Many resorts offer free transport to nearby attractions.

  • Bike & Scooter Rentals: Perfect for short distances, especially near beaches and towns.

Between the new taxi pricing, the gradual currency shift, and improved tourist infrastructure, 2025 is shaping up to be a smooth year for exploring Curaçao.

With clear guidelines and safer travel options, you can focus more on sipping cocktails, snorkeling in blue waters, and less on arguing over fares. You should also research on everything you need to know before visiting.

Bottom line? The island is investing in your experience and it shows.
