Swim With Turtles Curaçao: A Local Guide to Westpunt

There is a moment, the first time a green sea turtle glides up beside you in clear Caribbean water, when you forget to breathe through the snorkel. They are bigger than you expect, calmer than you expect, and utterly unbothered by your presence. In Curaçao, that moment is within reach for almost anyone.

The island is one of the more reliable places in the Caribbean to swim alongside wild sea turtles in their natural home, no aquarium, no enclosure. This is our local guide on how to swim with turtles in Curaçao the right way, where to go, when to arrive, and how to share the water responsibly so these gentle creatures stay wild and protected.

Where to Swim With Turtles in Curaçao

Two spots stand out, and both sit on the island's far western end near the fishing village of Westpunt, about an hour and a half from Willemstad by car.

Playa Grandi, also known as Playa Piskado, is by far the most popular and most reliable. Resident green turtles cruise the shallows here almost every day. Playa Lagun, a little closer in, is a calm cove where turtles often rest on the sandy bottom between snorkel sessions. Together they make a perfect western turtle day.

Playa Grandi (Playa Piskado): The Turtle Beach

This small fishing beach is the headline act. For years, local fishermen have cleaned their daily catch at the pier, and over time the scraps drew green turtles to the bay. Today a population of mostly juvenile green turtles lingers here, accustomed to gentle human company.

Entry from the sand is easy, though the bottom can be rocky, so water shoes help. Float out a short way, keep still, and let the turtles come to you. On a good day you may share the water with several at once. You might also spot a hawksbill turtle among them.

Playa Lagun: A Calm Cove Alternative

If Playa Grandi feels busy, or you simply want a quieter float, Playa Lagun is a short drive away. This sheltered cove sits between two cliffs, which keeps the water calm and clear, ideal for less confident swimmers.

Turtles here often rest on the sandy seabed toward the center of the bay, while the rocky edges teem with wrasse, snappers, and butterflyfish. It is a beautiful two-in-one stop, turtles plus a genuinely lovely reef snorkel.

Responsible Turtle Etiquette: The Golden Rules

Sea turtles in Curaçao are protected by law, and how we behave in the water directly affects their wellbeing. Please treat every encounter as a privilege, not a photo op. Organizations like Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao work hard to keep these animals safe, and visitors are a big part of that effort.

  • Never touch a turtle. It stresses them and can damage the protective layer on their shell.

  • Never feed them. Feeding makes turtles dependent and changes natural behavior.

  • Keep your distance, ideally a couple of meters, and never block a turtle swimming to the surface to breathe.

  • Avoid chasing, cornering, or crowding. Let the turtle set the pace and direction.

  • Skip the flash photography and the loud splashing. Calm water, calm turtles.

The Best Time of Day to Go

Timing genuinely improves your odds at Playa Grandi. Turtles tend to gather most actively in the early afternoon, roughly between noon and 4pm, when fishermen return and activity picks up around the pier.

Aim to arrive on the earlier side of that window to beat tour-bus crowds and find calmer water. Mornings can also be lovely and quieter, with better visibility, so if you prefer fewer people to more turtles, go early. Either way, a weekday usually feels more relaxed than a weekend.

What to Bring

A successful turtle day is mostly about a little preparation. Pack for a remote beach with limited facilities.

  • Mask, snorkel, and fins. A well-fitting mask makes the whole experience.

  • Water shoes for the rocky entry at Playa Grandi.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard to protect your skin and the water.

  • Plenty of drinking water, since awa and shade can be limited out west.

  • A waterproof or floating camera, used calmly and from a respectful distance.

  • Cash for the small beach kiosk and any parking.

Getting There From Willemstad

Both beaches sit at the western tip of the island, so plan for a scenic drive. From the capital, it is roughly 90 minutes by car to Westpunt along the main road, with a few worthwhile beach stops on the way.

A rental car is by far the easiest option, giving you the freedom to chase the best light and avoid the busiest hours. If you would rather not drive, several local operators run guided snorkel-with-turtles trips, which is a relaxed way to go if you prefer to leave the logistics to someone else. Make a Full Day of the West

The western end of Curaçao rewards a slow, full day, so do not rush back. The turtle beaches sit within easy reach of some of the island's most beautiful coves and reefs.

Pair Playa Grandi with a snorkel at nearby Playa Kalki, lunch at a beach kiosk, and a sunset stop at one of the western viewpoints before the drive home. Our sun-kissed guide to Curaçao's best beaches maps out the prettiest stops to string together along the way.

A Note on Conservation

Green sea turtles are a globally protected species, and Curaçao takes their care seriously. You can read more about the species on its Wikipedia page. The simplest way to protect them is the way you behave in the water, keeping your distance, never feeding, and choosing operators who respect the animals.

When you swim with turtles the right way, you become part of the reason they keep returning to these shores. That is a far better souvenir than any photo.
